Parents in Sports - Part 2

n our fist series we identified the various types of parents, who can be a positive or detrimental influence in sport participation. We discussed “confidence builders” and “confidence killers” for young athletes and the Long Term Athlete Development [LTAD] model as a new approach in Canadian sports. According to a recent January seminar I attended in Edmonton, hosted by Istvan Balyi [National Coaching Institute BC, the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, and Sport Canada LTAD] a “Paradigm Shift” sport and coaching is needed [meaning a change in the fundamental model of events/science]. While taking notes I sat there smiling away. The man relayed my thoughts on age group development I had tried to get across for endless years but people either thought I was too forward, crazy, or whatever. Ah, here comes the man and puts it on the line using pretty harsh words [bless him!]: We are not doing a good job! We don’t understand the essential approach for developing younger athletes, the necessary training methods and preparation, which cannot simply get pushed down from elite training. He cited Einstein’s famous quote: Insanity is “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Parents in Sports

.... “Sports are wonderful: they can bring you comfort and pleasure for the rest of your life.

Sports can teach you so much about yourself, your character, how to be resolute in moments of crisis and how to fight back from the brink of defeat.

In this respect, the lessons of sport cannot be duplicated easily.

You quickly discover your limits but you can also build self–confidence and a positive sense of yourself.

Never think of yourself as being above sports”…

(The late Arthur Ashe, 1993 in his postscript of “Days of Grace”)

 Parents in Sports

The purpose of “Parents in Sports” is to help us understand the important interactive role and relationship between club, coach, athletes, and parents.

Just when you think they’d be training their hardest….

Red Blood CellsSo here we are, 30 days to go until the start of the Vancouver Olympics, and the athletes are all making their final preparations for the games. That means getting in lots of extra practice, hitting the gym to get just a bit stronger, maybe doing some additional cardio to make sure that you are totally fit – right? Actually, most athletes do the exact opposite.
